The Third Thaw series follows a group of people sent as frozen embryos to Planet K851b, located 26 light years from Earth. There, they are “birthed” and raised by robots – a fact they do not learn until their 16th birthday.
Readers new to The Third Thaw will find this a compelling entry point into the series, while fans will enjoy following Horst and the Timoshenko family on another epic adventure. This ensemble cast of characters, led by Captain Horst, is both innocent and intrepid. There are plenty of good guys and bad guys and big fight scenes. There is the hard science and the plot twists one expects from Karl Hanson, and even some ancient history, but to say more risks spoilers.
Hanson, an engineer turned novelist, puts the science in science-fiction. His books are thoroughly researched and spring from the implications of theoretical physicists like Dirac, Einstein, and Thorne. Not that Hanson claims to be an expert on General Relativity, of course. Like Horst Apoteker, the captain of the Third Thaw cadet group and the first of the Thaws to complete the treacherous journey from New Eden to New Munich, Hanson often finds the mathematics of General Relativity “frustrating, but the potential for fun,” he says, “is limitless.”
